European BEV Performance: UK sales lead the way in Europe

Similar to EU Green Deal target, UK regulation ZEV mandate requiring that by 2030, all new cars and vans must be hybrid or zero-emission, with the sale of new petrol-only and diesel-only cars ending. Between 2030 and 2035, the sale of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and "full hybrids" (HEVs) will be permitted, with the goal of reaching 80% of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2030 and 100% by 2035.

Electric vehicle market share in the UK hit a record with 381,970 new BEV registrations were recorded in 2024: this put it first place in Europe for the first time, followed by Germany, who recorded 380,609 BEV registrations in the same period, showing a large increase in registrations (+53.5%) and remained the market leader in volume among EU countries.

Other notable performances happened in the following EU countries:

  • Italy: Experienced the highest percentage increase in the major markets (+126% in January 2025), driving a significant shift in its market.
  • Denmark: Also saw strong growth, with a (+123%) increase in registrations, though with lower market volumes compared to Italy.
  • Spain: Showed solid growth for BEVs (+48.5%) alongside strong increases in hybrid sales.

In any case, registrations in the European Union decreased by 5.9% in 2024 and the overall BEV market share in Europe was approximately 13.6% in 2024: while some countries like Belgium and Greece had strong increases, others like Finland and Sweden experienced significant declines.
